Hey Dick! I've been LOOSLY following the posts about, and from you on the
LSR list.... will read'em good tanite...sounds to me like like you did good
boy! You be "hooked" now....whoooie!

I've a few ideas for you; in my experience, I'd go with MSD for ignition
-though others may have better ideas, I think for what you pay, its awful
good. Something like a 6AL box with built in rev limiter would work really
  nice I'm thinkin'......along with onaa their dizzy's ( althoughI'm using
an pld Delco "door" style one with regular points to just trigger the MSD
unit -works for me !)

On gearing, don't be too hasty; do your math. real good first.
you know the drill; tire size, X gear X ???? and get it all figured first.
Oh, and keep the DRILL away from the tires will ya ???? -couldn't resist
sorry ol' buddy.

In my experience, ( I usta use, and build'em for the drags...) 10 bolt Chevy
rearend ratios go as follows: 3:08, 3:23, 3:55, 3:73, 4:10 and so on....
theres nothing between 3:73 and 4:10. I'm thinkin' you got a 3:73 by what
you report. That is a fairly common "stick" gear ratio back then.

hey, Carter carbs is good!!! I'd be stickin' with'em if I wuz you -which I
ain't.

Sounds like you had a ball. Congratulations!

yer pal, Dirty Doug
      .... a'wishin' I'da been there too, an' jealous I t'wern't

Hey Doug, all went well at Maxton. I had a great
time. Wish you coulda been there. I made a 99
mph run off the trailer to make sure no important
parts fell off. Even at that, i could tell the
thing was starving. We pulled off the Holley
(which turned out to be a 450 not a 600) and
slapped on a good ole 750 Carter AFB. (Us older
guys like dem Carters, ya know.) Next run out
was 124 and change, enough for a record, which I
claimed right then and there before I could break
something. We then tweaked it a little, I opened
up the headers and changed from C/GRS to T/O and
ran right next to 127 mph. I had decided on a
6200 red line before i left home, and that's
where I ran it. Not that it had a lot more in
it. I think it might have run 130, but i just
didn't want to wind it that tight. The rear end
was supposed to be a 3.73:1, but my computer
tells me it's something more like a 3.96:1. I
don't know for sure what Chevy makes between a
3.73 and a 4.11, but either way, it's way too low
for me. I'm gonna switch to a Ford 9" anyhow. I
gotta do some fenderwell mods too, that thang was
sticking it's butt up about four feet in the air,
and once it reached about 100, it was just hold
steady and pray, cause she really wanted to
wander in that wind. I'm going to drop the front
about 2 inches, the rear about 5 inches, and I'm
going to add a panhard bar to be sure it doesn't
sway next time. The lowering, coupled with a
coupla minor engine mods and taller gears are all
the changes I wanna make until I run it again.
Makin too many changes at once makes it hard to
know what worked and what didn't. Hopin for a
135 - 140 next year. My crew chief promises me
that if it runs good at Maxton in the spring,
we'll make it to Bonneville in the fall! Sure
hopes it runs good in the spring.
Stopped in Birmingham to visit with my son on the
way home. We was lookin at some CDs at his
favorite CD store, and my own luvin crew chief
bought me a copy of "Riding with the King" (Eric
Clapton and BB King). Dang sure are some good
sounds on that.
Gotta go look like I'm workin, catch ya later.
