There were apparently aircraft Skunk Works
activities going on at many locations.  It seems
that the automotive industry adopted the nick
name too.  I seem to remember that the
development of the Chev porcupine motor was done
in a facility nicknamed the skunk works.  I think
the development and competition of the early
Chrysler hemi and the original Mopar Max Wedge
also took place at facilities nicknamed the Skunk
Works.
