I visited the NSU motorcycle museum about 10 years ago and was lucky
enough to be allowed to crawl all over these bikes, taking pictures.
(The museum was almost deserted of visitors and the curators seemed glad
to have anyone taking such interest in their displays.) Unfortunately,
they were NOT in good condition (the record bikes, not the curators) at
the time. Access panels were corroded shut so I couldn't open them up
to get pictures of the steering gear. Also, the engines were missing.
It was explained to me that after the records were set, the engines were
removed and used in other racing bikes. That's how it was back then,
especially for a small company. (We've all ready about Ferrari piling
up "worthless" race cars behind the buildings. Probably worth maybe 1/4
$billion today...)
