timing chains & timing gears

I have always been intrigued by the various "no
chain" timing gear sets offered for modern V-8s,
and assumed that they must not really work, or
else they would be the "standard of the industry"
for racing.  What's the deal with those timing
gears?  Why aren't they the answer?
