There has been a few questions concerning rules and what is allowed or not
allowed recently. This brought to mind what is my pet peeve in the coupe/sedan
category. I,d like to explain my view for your consideration and comment.
Current policy allows a production car to become an altered by applying duct
tape to the grill openings. I disagree with this policy. To me, an altered is
a highly modified vehicle requiring a fairly significant amount of change from
a production car. The rule states that" within the Modified category, the
amount of modification determines the class. For example a Gas Coupe is
basically a Production car with an engine swap, an Altered is a Gas Coupe with
headlites and grill covered and the engine set back, a Competition Coupe is an
Altered with the nose lengthened and streamlined." How can a Production car
which doesn, t meet the Gas Coupe requirements be and Altered, i.e., engine
swap, quickchange rearend, or a non stock supercharger. Some officials, when
asked say, " well the car with duct tape applied no longer meets the
Production category requirments, therefore it must be an Altered'. I disagree,
the car is illegal until the tape is removed, but could run for time only, but
not a record. The current policy is a perversion of the rules and unfair to
any racer who goes to the trouble of building a real Altered. Furthermore, I
fell that there should be some reqirements to be an Altered just as there is
to be a Gas coupe. For example, a minimun engine setback, non stock frame,
etc. Terry Hunt, Guam Bomb, #743
