My daughter has acquired a classic , sort of, an '88 Chevy Celebrity with a 2.5
liter 4 cylinder. If any one has pounded on one to fix the things that seem to
fall off I have 2 problems with it. First seemingly simple thing is the horn. No
fuse that i could see and I could not find the horn relay to save myself. Where
the heck is it? I assume it is the relay that is bad or a fuse as i took the
steering wheel trim ring off and grounded the wire used to fire the relay with
no luck and did not think both horns could be bad. Second it did not pass
emissions. The HC was good and the CO was good too but the NOX was 3000 ppm out
of 1258 allowed. So I changed the O2 sensor that sure looked trashed and the air
filter soaked in goo, added 2 cans of dry gas, injector cleaner and did a
decarbon job with some water down the throttle body at a fast idle. results were
HC still good but actually 10 points higher, CO still good and about the same
and NOX down to 2080 from 3000 but still not ok. I have checked the EGR with a
hand held pump and no matter how fast I pump it won't hold a vacuum with the
engine running but if i pump fast the idle speeds up a tiny bit. So is it the
EGR or the catalytic converter????? This thing is a beast and I hate to put
money into it that is not necessary it does have 118,000 miles on it. Oh one
other thing it has DIS so you can't change the timing and all the hoses look ok
and are hooked up to the correct places. And in fact it seems to run ok and
drive well.
