Scott, those flathead sixes were real dogs when they were new .
My dad had a 1951 Ford company car that I drove a few times when I was
16 years old and it couldn' t get out of its' own way compared to Dad's
'41 Chev that I learned to drive on at age 13 ..... those overhead valves
made a really big difference ! Despite that early lesson, all my own
first cars were flathead V8s until I finally broke down and bought a Chev
with a 283" smallblock in 1960 ...... which was later to become the 301"
in my lowbuck gasser . I do recall seeing a flathead 6 with a finned
head and dual carbs in an old issue of Hot Rod ....... I was amazed
that anyone would spend much money or time on what I remembered
as the worst performing engine of any car I had driven or ridden in .
Even the little V860 in my '39 standard coupe would have put
that Supersickly Six to shame in a stop light Grand Prix !
Boat anchor not a bad idea if you can' t peddle them ......
or how about pull the crank out for a Mailbox Post ???
               Bruce Ferguson
...... still love flathead V8s as much as smallblock Chevs
