Hi Allen & Trish,

(I'm resending to the list as info. Also, I added a bit more directions to
the end)

> What do I need to know about getting a tech inspection on my car at El
Mirage?

It would help if you had a log book although it's not absolutely necessary.
They have them for sale at the registration trailer, but ran out in May, and
those
without had to wait till Sunday to get one and then get tech'd.

Bring money ($40.00).

Having a "sanitary" built vehicle helps a lot (know your rules and
construction limits, and have your car built to same), but I've seen some
dirt-mobiles go through without a hitch.

> Do I need to make prior arrangements?

1st come, 1st served, so plan on waiting in line (cars) for :30-:60. Getting
there on Saturday at noon is the best.

> Is there a chance that they won't have time to do mine if I trailer it
down?

Vehicles can be tech'd on the trailers if the inspector can see all the
parts. They usually have time to do all. If you're late (Saturday after 4:00
or so), you may have to come back on Sunday AM. I usually shoot for no later
than 2:30 personally.

> Any particulars about the process that you can pass along will be
appreciated!

Having your log book filled out properly will smooth things out. If you have
your SCTA license, bring it, although they don't always ask to see it.

Make sure you have a race number. If not you need to call Chuck Kalbach (in
rule book), and get one pronto.

Be prepared to put on all your race togs and hat, and strap yourself into
the vehicle (cars). Have an assistant with you to demonstrate how you would
get out in an emergency. [Bikes need to show boots, leathers, and gloves].
Be prepared to show any helmet stickers if applicable. Leave Nitrous bottles
out. Have a fire-extinguisher, CB, Dzeuss wrench (if applicable, or large
blade screwdriver) in your support vehicle.

Know your class designation, and the record you're attempting. Have your
vehicle numbers and class designation on the vehicle clearly as per the rule
book. You might also write same on support vehicle's windshield with white
shoe polish, although not necessary till race time.

If it's your 1st time (and it sounds like it is ...), plan on attending the
rookie orientation on Saturday PM ... I think it's around 4 or 5. It's VERY
valuable, and will answer a lot of your questions about running and
procedure. They also do a course drive as part of it. A driver's meeting on
Sunday AM (7 or 8, I forget which) is also required. They will review some
of the rookie stuff which we all forget overnight.

> Also, any "easy" way to find the dry lake, or is it obvious where to go
(what road to take) once you get down there?

I would go 5 all the way down to the grapevine (about 400 or so miles from
you). Take 138 East (toward Lancaster). Take 14 South. Exit Palmdale Bl.
(East). Go left on 240th St. and right on Avenue P (El Mirage Rd.). Entrance
to the lake bed is on left. Look for a big sign. Time from Palmdale Bl to
the lake bed access road is about :20-:30 depending on the weight of your
foot. (Check Yahoo maps for miles).

Go left onto the access road and follow the road keeping the barrier to your
left. You will see signs for the lake bed on your left. Drop down to the
lake bed. Drive off into the horizon keeping an eye for the coned off course
and other vehicles (it can be VERY foggy in the AM so drive carefully).
After a few miles you will see activity off to your ahead and toward the
left. Head for the crowd, and look for the covered tech areas. get in line
on one of the left 2 or 3 lines (bikes are on the right 2). Reg. trailer is
to the right of tech.

E-Mail me off list if you need more. I'm in Sac. not too far from you.

Best of luck. I won't be running ... going in for shoulder surgery next
week, but I'll be running in July, and then Bonneville in August.
