Dale,
Almost.  The molten AL consumes the foam, creating the PART.  The cores are
still made of sand.  In the lost foam process everything you create in Styrofoam
becomes aluminum.  Everything in sand becomes air.  When the castings are
solidified the sand is shaken out, leaving a cavity where the sand was.
