Rick, this reminds me that about 35 years ago P.C. Vincent said in an
article words to the effect that "There were fast motor cycles in
England long before the geniuses of this age had ever trod the earth."

The very same thing applies to America, of course, for example, Harry
Sucher records in his excellent book "The Iron Redskin" (p. 163) that
Indian factory rider Johnny Seymour rode an eight valve 1000cc Twin
early in January 1926 to a two-way speed of 132 mph at Daytona Beach
which, the book states, was a "...a new world's record.." which
"...stood for nearly ten years."  On the same day Seymour set a record
with the factory 500cc racejob at the course at 115 mph. These were the
light and spindly-looking racers of the day.  Naked and unashamed. The
factory Harley racebikes of the era were developed to a similar pitch.
