Leonard started his career on Triumph machines, teaming up =
with tuner Tom Sifton in 1953 for a record number of wins on =
Harley-Davidson machinery. He won the Daytona 200 twice, back when it =
was run on the beach, and his record speed on the beach course, =
99.68mph, still stands. After several years on the rostrum on two =
wheels, the star rider turned to four wheels, winning two USAC Indy-car =
championships in the early seventies, and coming within an ace of =
winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1968 in the amazing STP Turbine car.=20
Northern California-based Leonard remains the only US rider =
to win national championships on two and four wheels.=20
