I wouldn'ta sent this but for Neil's note:

When I arrived in Houghton, Michigan, in September 1967 to go to Michigan
Tech -- it was during the hassle of Daylight Saving time vs. NOT DST.
Anyway, I could leave the college dorm, on EST, drive the mile or so to
downtown Houghton, and find myself on EDT. But as I drove down Shelden
Avenue I'd have to pay attention to whether I wanted the Post Office, on
Daylight Saving Time, the left side, or the other side of the street where
I'd find the County Building, on Standard time, aka known as Daylight
Wasting Time.

And so on, back and forth, as I drove through the six blocks of the
5,000-population town. Ye-haa, it was fun. Some bars closed at 2AM EDT,
some at 2AM DST. Drink 'til one closed and then go to the other, if you
will. . .

Take a look at your Michigan maps and you'll see that the Upper Peninsula is
west of most of the Central Time Zone border -- you'll eventually figger out
why we still (on an EVERY DAY BASIS) have to remember which time zone is on
Central, which is on Eastern. Both time zones are in our territory.

I remember dating my wife and going to the drive-in movie to see the
beginning of the show at about 10.30PM. Yeah, her mother believed it when I
explained our 3AM return time. Yeah, really. REALLY!!! Ha, haa...

But I'm not married to her anymore, and Nancy and I go to bed at a time that
shall not be discussed in these lines...

Wes;

Arizona did try Daylight Savings Time for a while but that experiment was a
nightmare.

If one were to drive across northern AZ during that period, here's what
you'd face:

Cross CA state line into AZ: change time zones-- reset your watch.

Enter Navajo Reservation: change back to Standard Time-- reset your watch.

Enter Hopi Reservation: change to Daylight Savings Time-- reset your watch.
(If Navajos do something, Hopis do the opposite!)

Enter Navajo Reservation again: change back to Standard Time-- reset your
watch.

Leave Navajo Reservation: change back to Daylight Savings Time-- reset your
watch.

Cross AZ state line into NM: change time zones-- reset your watch.

You could wear out a Timex just driving around AZ! Fortunately, we don't use
anything but MST now.
