Hi Jim,
Not sure, but I know a 'purlin' in post and beam joinery, is a piece that goes
between rafters to support a roof.
The purlins go between the paralel rafters like the rungs of a ladder.
If there are two pairs of rails front to back, maybe that is it; to end up like
an 8 in. wide ladder.
