Hi Folks, thanks to all that ventured opinions on heavy vs. light
flywheel weights. About 20 responded, a slight majority said go with
the light aluminum wheel, some liked the 60 lb wheel, and some said cut
the heavy wheel to 40 lbs or so. One Ardun Bonneville record holder
said on a standing mile you won't be able to feel or tell any difference
whichever wheel you use.

A couple points were brought out that I hadn't previously considered,
one is that the rotating parts of the crank, rods and front hub with
pulley come to 80 or 85 lbs on the Flathead and this is a bigger
flywheel effect than either size of flywheel, which only adds to this
base rotating weight.

Another result of the choice of a heavy wheel is that it opposes the
quick braking effect of the engine when you shut the throttle after
clearing the timing trap and go into your hard braking mode for the
limited stopping space at Maxton. This could be material with
"chute-less" cars.
Not critical, but adverse to your purpose at this point.

At the moment, it looks like the light wheel may be the better choice,
since the blower is there to give a large, broad, flat torque curve to
the engine and probably doesn't need much help from the flywheel.

Another beautiful Virginia June morning, time for a romp down through
the Dismal Swamp on the 250 Ninja! Ardun Bill
