Some old aircraft systems used a 3-phase AC generator driven off the
distributor to drive an AC remote tach. You could do the same thing with a
small permanent magnet DC motor-- they make good DC generators if they are
shaft-driven. A DC voltmeter then could then read a voltage that would be
proportional to RPM.

I just remembered something. When we were drag racing Troy Buff ran a tach
drive that I have not seen again. It was a servo motor that screwed onto the
mechanical tach drive on his mag. It was connected to the tach head
electrically. I don't think it had a battery associated with it. Has anyone
seen one of these setups?
