Jim,
    The tandem trailer would be more stable, safer in the event of a tire 
failure, and less tongue weight sensitive. It's probably a good idea to have 
a little longer trailer than you think you need, allowing a place for storage 
cabinets and possibly a work bench. 
    The single axle open trailer that I have for my dragster and the modified 
roadster at some lakes meets weighs something over 1000 lbs. By the time I 
add the 1300-2000 lb race car I have a heavy enough load that it's hard to 
get tires with enough capacity.
