Since those outside the land-speed community have no idea what the SCTA/BNI
or FIA class designations mean, the recognition comes from peers and
aficionados of that type of racing.  How many people in the world know the
parameters for the two examples Malcolm gave?  How many care?

It goes back to the question of how many layers of recognition do you want
or need.  That's a very personal thing.  For the bulk of the salt racers I
think I can safely say they agree with Dahlgren.  The others pay their money
and go for it at accredited meets.  People like Costella have their own
acceptance of the effect it has on other racers at those meets.

If the FIA/ACCUS were to bestow approval on say, drag racing, would anyone
involved in the sport in the USA care?  Who would be the experts?
