Chris has this right, but there is a bit more to the story, especially on
the west coast, which affected the LSR competition on the flats for years.

Haven't wished to intrude into the FIA/ACCUS fracas until now......
Per Dave Dahlgren's comments about AAA sanctioning of LSR records -
AAA was created to promote the burgeoning auto industry and its corollary -
road building - and to disseminate general information to the public. One of
the promotional methods was by holding auto races of all kinds. The early
AAA
directors were employed in the auto industry, and were thus motivated by the
promise of future profits from auto sales, etc.
After WWII the auto industry was firmly established in American culture, and
the directors of the AAA were no longer entreprenurial businessmen, but
lawyers and other professionals. Their focus was changed from racing
promotion
to public education - especially in the area of safety. In short, the new
directors felt that the racing interests and the public highway interests
were
diverging. So they decided to get out of the racing business. This gave rise
to USAC, IMCA, and other sanctioning bodies. In fact, nearly all of the
car-related organizations that have recently celebrated a 50th anniversary
sprang up after AAA decided to concentrate on road safety. It's all in the
history books, folks.
