As from the quote I posted from the 1962 program, it has always been
about protection of the present and future members. Keep the task at a
level that the achievement means more than "a walk in the park." I am
proud to be a member of the Club, and I will be glad to sit in the back,
in fact I usually do.
I guess we shouldn't keep the standards high since some work hard and
can't get the job done. Let's make it a one way deal over 200 MPH, then
it would mean a lot more since no one that can go 200 MPH will be left
out. I bet someone would still think that the bar is too high. The
trouble is that those that run 199.999 MPH would be on the outside.
What really amazes me is people that get a ride, get in the club and you
never see them again. I ran for years, although I may not have been the
brightest bulb in the chandler, with the 200 MPH membership as a goal,
when I finally got there, it was kind of a let down. I would and do
continue to compete because I love the competition, with others and with
myself. Fast will never be fast enough regardless of the number.
Challenge is the name of the game.
Those that work hard and don't make it just need to work harder. You
also imply that it is the sponsorship and deep pockets that are the
winners. You are a prime example of the invalidity of that statement. I
know some, with very deep pockets, that have chased this dream for a
number of years and still are in the hunt. Money, although it does
relieve some of the pain, is not the answer to reaching the goal. In my
view, tenacity is the key. If you get knocked down, you get up and try
again.
