Thanks for supplying the details. I guess we'll never know whether it could
have been made to work or not.

 

It's a shame those early drivers didn't have the benefits of modern-day fuel
cells, fire suppression systems, full roll cages, etc.

You're absolutely right, Neil.  It didn't qualify.  It was called the
"capsule car" and Bobby Johns was driving for Smokey in 1964.  They put
together a heroic effort to get it qualified and then with 4 hours of
qualifying left, Johns overcooked turn 1 and backed it into the wall.  It
wasn't a bad crash, but all the stuff in the back of the car was one-off
custom stuff and they had no way to get it repaired by the end of
qualifying.  

I spose Smokey might have tried to thrash on it and get it back together,
but right after the qualifying crash, he learned that his friend, Fireball
Roberts had just been killed at Charlotte.
