When I was down in Chile some time ago, I visited some places in the
northern part of the country around the edge of the Atacama Desert-- the
driest place on earth-- and heard about a big salt flat called "Salar de
Atacama". It is a very big area and from what I've seen in a few photos,
part of it looks like part of it might be suitable for LSR attempts.

See: http://www.geo.umass.edu/climate/mathias/pictures/chile032.jpg

Has anyone ever heard of any LSR attempts in Chile or of anyone who has
scouted this area for racing?

Chile is a nice country and it's somewhat closer than Lake Gardiner (sp?).
Some of the Salar brine lakes are inhabited by flamingos-- a whole different
place, that's for sure.
