     Greg ...... Why not put a transverse hoop, bent to fit up under the 
cowl,  
against the back of the firewall, that ties into each framerail ..... then 
join it 
to the front vertical tubes of the main cage with either one or two 
horizontal 
tubes, plus a diagonal, or two diagonals to form an X, on each side, to add 
great strength to this structure ?   Your feet and legs get more protection 
and the pedals can stay where they are . As far as the additional weight, 
think of this as ballast that serves a very useful safety feature.  Don't 
forget 
your gussets at each joint ......
