We took a drive today up what is billed as the World's Longest Art
Gallery,
9 Mile Canyon. It's thirty eight plus miles of rock art ... pictographs
chipped into the black surface of the red sandstone cliff faces by
ancient
ancestors of today's "Native Americans."

We didn't find all the sites shown but we did find many of them and each
one
was a new, fun discovery. If you have an extra day you can squeeze into
your trip to the salt flats, this is well worth the twelve hours we
spent.
>From Salt Lake City it's just over three hours going to and coming from
the
first of the pictographs. The rest of the time we spent slowly driving
the
canyon with a guide (available on the web) describing some of the
locations.
Everything we saw was identifiable from the road. Nothing we found was
over
fifty yards from the road and all were at a level easily accessible for
the
persons who did the work. Some we just spotted as we slowly drove the
excellent dirt road. I shot over fifty exposures of the drawings and
could
have taken many more if I had wanted to record everything we saw. I did
use
a 300 mm lens rather than climb to some of the spots. It helped to have
binoculars to spot some of the sites as well.
When I get my new web pages up I'll post some of the pictures. We're
supposed to be working on them next week.
(The road is well maintained by oil exploration companies. They have
created quite a flap over their desires to do some seismic exploration
work
in the canyon this year. There are working wells in the immediate
area.)
