Per threads established by Keith Turk regarding the 4" rollbar padding,
Russ Wilkinson's reference to the HANS device, and Tom Shannon's reference to
rollbar shielding - all are good ideas developed for the safety of the
drivers.
The rollbar padding was suggested by Cruz Pedregon after his brain got
mashed once too often when the tires shook violently on his Funny Car. The
foam's laminated design was intended to decelerate the driver's helmet more
gradually thus preventing "getting rattled" in a high-G move.
The HANS device has been around for quite a few seasons, and is an
excellent safety device intended to prevent the separation of a driver's head
from his shoulders at the 4th & 5th vertebrae during sudden deceleration. God
bless the fellow who conceived of them, and produced them for racers.
The rollbar shielding (sheet titanium, or stainless) is intended to
prevent motor, tire, or other racecar parts from entering the rear of the
driver's compartment. Darrell Russell was indeed the unfortunate soul whose
blood was used to write this new safety rule.
Carl Olson & Graham Light would both be excellent sources to contact for
more info, as we all wish for racers everywhere to keep racing as long as they
wish - not as long as their machines allow them to.
