cleaning alloy castings?

List, has anybody got any good suggestions for cleaning alloy castings (bike
crank cases) of old paint/oil etc... it's not something I want to farm out and
was looking for something I could do myself in the work shop. I think there
was a discussion on this some time ago, can anyone refresh my memory? Thanks.
