EDM machining does not "burn" through the metal, although it sure looks
like it upon observing an EDM in action and viewing the cut material
afterwards. The shock bubble formed by the high voltage spark actually erodes
its way through the metal - it literally "explodes" the linkage of the atomic
compounds.
Don't forget wire EDM - it cuts through metal much as a waterjet does. It
leaves a smoother finish requiring no handwork afterwards and no burrs.
By the way - the latest editon of Modern Machine Shop features a squib on
the smallest EDM'd hole now produced - only .0004 in diameter through .010
steel.
