Mayf,

I would try to determine if the problem is Hardware or Software. I would 
install
my WD serial drive and install Windows 2000. If that works, install Win 
XP SP2
with no further updates... Etc.
I have Win 2K & a WD 160Gb serial drive if you're interested Mayf,
