Bud,
I hate to differ with you--they are core plugs, NOT freeze plugs! The
block will crack from internal freezing LONG before a core plug will pop out
of position. Those holes were there to allow room for supports for the sand
cores for the internal water passages during the casting process. It's a
very common misconception that they have a freeze-protection function.
