| Gordon: The type of installation you are refereing to has a stand pipe on the valve. When the valve is in the normal position it draws fuel from the top of the pipe leaving some fuel below the pipe as a reserve. Switching the valve allows the fuel to be drawn from the bottom of the tank. The smaller older motorcyles use this type of valve and sometimes they just screw into a bung in the bottom of the tank.
