I recently had two problems with my TC that drove me nuts--sounds a little
like your troubles, Andy. Both of these were intermittant problems--car would
go along fine, then sputter for a while, then fine again. One problem was a
short at the distributor--the insulating grommett was missing and I didn't
realize it, and after I found that and replaced it, things were better. The
other was a broken spark plug wire connector, the kind that are crimped on,
bought from Moss. I took the plug wires from my TD, put them on the TC, and
haven't had any sign of a problem since. Little things like that, especially
intermittant, will cause you headaches.
