Many years ago that kind of setup was done using bucket tappets from a
Studebaker or Packard or some other long-gone American car (I no longer
remember which one).  The idea is sound: Lighten up the valve ttrain as
much as possible and you reduce the load on the cam lobes.  I think Brown
& Gammons now supply that type of tappets, with longer pushrods to suit.
