Paul,
   Great idea for the pinewood racer.  It doesn't seem likely to me that
the block shape of a TD would have significant effects on the racer's
ability to slip through the air at the speed one expects it to achieve. 
An MGB-owning grandfather in this neighborhood helps by putting the axles
and wheels into a lathe and trueing them, then sprays silicone onto the
axle. He says that some axles out of the box are perfect while others are
noticeably not straight or round. 
   A few years ago someone, either Moss or T-Series Register (in TSO) 
had a line drawing that could be traced onto paper, then cut, then folded
to make a TD.  If this sparks recollection in a lister who can remember
the source, please let me know. I probably still have the original
drawing somewhere, then can xerox it for you.
