| Thanks to all who responded, its almost 100% that the blind hole was a wood screw and a good guess by Sherwood Parker was that it was used to temporarily hold the door in place while the factory placed the bolts. I think I'll make up a backing plate for the bolts so that the wood doesn't get squeezed....
