Back in 1973-74 I bought a cluster gear from Moss.  I don't know whether it was 
NOS or a repro.  However, I never had much problem with wear until it
decided to shear off several teeth during a down shift from 3rd to 2nd at about 
25 MPH.  I don't know if these would be due to excessive hardness or
softness.
