So I'll liven it up a bit with another looong question. <G>

My V8 has developed an annoying problem, hmm I guess in the last month. I
thought it was fuel pump related what with my Facet nuking itself but now
I'm not so certain.

Car
---
74 CB Factory V8. Edelbrock 500 carb, Mallory 27 Series dist converted to
run Lumenition performance ignition - module & matched coil. Lumenition Rev
limiter. No vac. adv.

Symptons
---------
Driving on light throttle openings only. Perhaps climbing a grade,
hesistation, a hiccup. Like a little misfire. Seems to be much more of a
problem on a grade, and perhaps three of four little hiccups. Driving along
on a flat surface doesn't seem to trigger the problem, only very occasional
hiccup. I don't get any such problems driving at decent throttle openings
and the power is very good. Problem for some weird reason seems to be worse
in overdrive 4th. Perhaps just the rev range she is operating in.

Known Problems
--------------

Car has an exhaust manifold leak on third cyl. from front rhs bank. Quite
noticeable and can hear it spit in the car. Unfortunately the threads inside
the block itself must be stripped. Problem since I bought it last year.

Keeps blowing fuse, no 2 up on block. Cannot find the cause after much
searching and swearing. *Very* intermittant, no apparent consistency.

Fuel Gauge stopped working last week - related?

Am missing the LHS bank flame trap at the moment, just straight through from
cover to t-piece and into the air filter. Filter tends to collect a fair
whack of oil but nothing massive, engine doesn't consume much and OP is
great for a V8.

A knock has developed from the front, sounds like it's near the dist. drive
shaft. But I am thinking it sounds like the bearings in the water pump even
though according to the PO it was replace around 15,000mls ago. Belt is not
over tight. The noise comes especially at idle and is hard to pinpoint.
Doesn't sound like a big end to me having had that happen on the A several
times now, not to mention #^!&^ busted cranks. <G>

Guesses
-------

Well. Either ignition or fuel related I think. I can't imagine it being the
new SU on such light loads so I rule that out. Grunt is great at WOT. I am
thinking maybe the lumenition is dodgy, but I would have thought it would be
so under hard acceleration. I am guessing:

a) Plug leads - I have been through lots until I went for a set of 10mm from
Magnecor. However they only have 10,000mls on them. I melted three sets
prior to this - at the boot. How do I test leads? The old pull the plug
method I doubt will work as I think she fires 99% of the time.

b) Rotor cracked

c) Dist Cap

d) This manifold leak, weakening the mixture at high vacumn - cruise
conditions.

e) D sounds like fabulous excuse to fit Peter Burgess heads to fix the
stripped thread problem. <VBG> ;))

f) carb tuning off - do edelbrocks go out of tune? Doubt it??

The problem isn't bad enough to cause the car to cut, but it is enough to
make it a pain to pull away sometimes and annoying as it surges after each
misfire, especially when just burbling through town. It's bad enough now
that I don't want to do long journeys as it definitely gets worse with a bit
of heat in the car. I'm pretty sure it's the leak myself, but what do y'all
think? :)

Cheers,
Neil
