Seems to me that if you *must* have LEDs the only safe option is to use an
array with an equivalent load resistor. That would allow you to use either
the standard MGB flasher or a modern electronic, still have failure indication
if the connection through to the array should fail, and as Jeff says failure
of all elements in the array simultaneously which didn't also affect the
equivalent load resistance would be pretty unlikely.
