Porter's book on B restoration says you must not try to pry the chrome 
from the old, presumably stiffened, rubber.  You have to cut the rubber 
around it or you'll destroy the chrome.  Then he says you put the new 
rubber in, and it is comparatively easy to reinsert the chrome in the 
soft new rubber.  I gather your friend wants to put new molding in the 
old rubber; Porter does not deal with that.
