Actually it looks like the problem is solved. I think the culprit was one
of the shoes on the left hand side, it had a couple of cracks going from
side to side. While I was trying everything else to solve the problem I had
the original set of shoes relined. Last night I put them on and the car
seems to stop just fine. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

On the MGA you just have to remove a couple of screws to get the drums off.
On the TD/F the drum rides directly on the bearings, so you need a hub
puller to get the drum off, then the rear bearing usually sticks to the
spindle wich means puller #2 to get it off before you can reassemble the
mess. I guess the upside is that the bearings get fresh grease every time
you pull it apart.
