Asking about a persons first MG is like asking about their first
love. If I only would have known, what I know now. I purchased my
'78 Midget 7 years ago. It was running great at the time and
continued to run fine for three years. However, things wear out and
break. The car is now 17 years old. Unless the car has been
partially restored, you should expect some work. If you don't want to
do it yourself and can find a good mechanic, it is only expensive. I
started out taking it to a mechanic. Now I do the work myself. It is
cheaper and I enjoy it.
I agree with James that an old car is better. I think the crome
bumpers without the emissions is the way to go. But any MG is a lot
of fun. As soon as I finish rebuilding the one I have, I am looking
for another.

I have found a 79 midget with about 45K miles and pretty much original
equipment. It runs well and the body seems to be in pretty good shape. There
are the expected non-functional switches on the dash, etc. My question is
what should I look out for/have checked out in this car? Are there any
common, yet non-obvious maladies that would make this a nightmare? I'm not
looking for a project car, just a fun car to drive. He's asking for $2500.
