I caught the tail end of this thread and I'm having the same trouble. I
ordered new plug wires and it didn't help.
Last night I took the distributor apart. Centrifugal weights are free,
the vacuum plate didn't move and I freed that up. The vacuum advance rod
holds vacuum but moves the points plate only about 1/8 inch or less, is this
enough? Engine has good vacuum. Put in new points, coil, condenser, rotor,
cap, and wires. Idles fine, but won' go above 3,000 rpm. If you drive it,
it just doesn't have any power. Found the plugs fouled, and replaced them.
Compression in all cylinders about 185 psig...figure there's carbon there
also. The fuel pump is putting out the manual specs.
The car's a 1975 MGB and only had it 6 months. Was running good and went
downhill over a 5 day period. The person who had it before removed all the
pollution equipment. Anybody any ideas? Have done nothing to the
carbureator.
