It's easier than you think.  First, you whack off a few hundredths from the 
mating surfaces of the caps, i.e.

      _____      _____ <--- shave here
     |     |    |     |
     |      \__/      |

then, reassemble the lot.  The actual openings for the bearings are now 
*smaller* than original, so the line-boring can then make a perfectly
straight, originally-sized bore.

Alternatively, you can just shim them up with aluminum foil held in place 
with epoxy.
