Thanks for welcoming me to the newsgroup.  Sounds like you have had a number 
of good long trips in your TD.  My longest trip in my TD was in the late 
60's when I went with 2 girls (one of whom I ended up marrying) on a camping
trip from the San Francisco Bay Area (where I still live today) through the
Colorado mountains, down through Arizona and the Grand Canyon, Southern 
California, and back home.  The two girls took turns sitting between the 
two front seats on top of the emergency brake for the whole trip!  We had 
sleeping bags, tents, etc. tied all over the car - on the head lights, in
front of the radiator, on the spare tire in back.  Never had a single 
mechanical problem except for a leak in the external oil line which was
easily brazed at a small town repair shop.

Thanks also for your offer of help and your high recommendation of Chip Old
for his expertise.  I really appreciate everyone's responses on this list.

I'm fowarding this to the newsgroup, since folks might enjoy the travel story.
