Matt,
I would use the 80W/90 oil or whatever is specified by the manufacturer for
the diff.
A tool which looks a bit like a dog's bone with a variety of different sized
square fittings sticking out of both ends of it should cost practically
nothing, especially the Made in China version, which should be quite good
enough.
When refilling the diff either measure very carefully the quantity to be
used (less a bit for the oil remaining attached to the innards of the diff)
or ensure that the car is on a perfectly level surface. It is very easy to
over or under fill a diff due to the effects of the slope caused by jacking
or ramps. Overfilling will cause oil to force its way out through seals and
wheel bearings. Underfilling can cause rapid wear.
While you are at it have a look at the breather on top of the axle to see
that it is clear and undamaged. It is a small upwards facing tube with a
cap on the top.
Most modern cars never require diff oil changes, in fact they do not have a
drain hole. It is the same oil and generally speaking the diffs are the
same so don't be in too much of a hurry to change it unless you are
overhauling it.
