Just in the interest of keeping the facts straight, there was no
requirement to use hardened valve seats in 1971. GM didn't start
using them across the board until 1973. I believe that Ford started
at the same time. I don't know where Mr. Williams got his info, but
it is not true.

I just verified the GM info with a former (retired) GM engine engineer.
I fact, the sequence was hardened valve seats - 1973, electronic
ignition (simple no breaker points) - 1975, catalytic converter - 1975.
