The Bentley that Jeremy is referring to is the Bentley's manual (reprint
of factory shop manual).

You are exactly right about the centerline.
A shop might ream the two bushings independently, and the newly installed
kingpin might fit snugly, but if they are not aligned, one bushing will
touch the kingpin in two spots only, at the top on one side and at the
bottom on the other side.
It doesn't take many miles of driving and the whole affair has more play
than before the job...
