Subject: MGB: Steering column rattle fixed!

Well, I may be counting my chickens before they are hatched, but I
finally tackled and conquered the steering column rattle that I have put
up with for 2 summers, in my 'B. We have a '73 parts car which was taken
apart and the parts stored many years ago. I've been looking for the
steering colmmn from it for years, to use it in place of my worn out '72
column. I finally found it today (You should SEE the mess in the
garage), and lo-and-behold, the upper bushing/bearing is like new! I
then promptly removed the old rack (a peace of cake, BTW, when it has
been out before), and noticed the columns are TWO DIFFERENT LENGTHS! No
need to panic, though. Switching the upper bearings was as easy-as-pie.

So here I am , with a refurbished steering column, but no-one to
help to put it back in! It's kinda tough to align the column with the
steering u-joint blindly. As soon as Pop arrives to give me a hand, I
should have 'er back together lickity-split. I can't believe I put up
with 2 years of rattling! I really am the world's worst procrastinator!

(Update: I did manage to get it installed myself)

I'm trying to track down the source of a "shimmy" in my front end that
occasionally occurs, at no particular speed. If it still persists after
the column refurbish, all i have left to check/fix is the steering rack
(suspension has been completely redun over the last few years). That may
have to wait until this winter, unless I can do it on a saturday!
What do youz think?

Now I don't feel so bad about skipping BATANS's latest trip today since
I accomplished somethimg. I
listened to the weather-person and decided not to go as they were calling
for rain. I bet Bob is going to say what a great run it was! Oh well.

Cheers!
