Wire wheel klunks

Wire wheels must have the knockoff spinner tight to prevent the klunk on
braking (and accelerating for the rear).  While it is true that the hub and
wheel splines wear, that only changes the size of the klunk (until they strip
allowing the wheel to spin).  I believe that most of the wear comes from not
having them tightened sufficiently in the first place.  For the splines to be a
tight enough fit by themselves to prevent klunking, they would have to be a
press fit and you would have to drive them on with a sledge hammer.  There has
to be a little clearance between the hub and the wheel to allow fitting and
removal.  The only way to avoid the klunk and subsequent wear on the splines is
to keep those knockoffs tight.
