T-series (floorboards, preparation)

Hi,

I have a small question on the floorboards of T series cars. After a struggle 
with the rusted screws I managed to get the floorboard out in one piece. And as 
they are quite all right I want to use them again. 

Question: What kind of preparation is / was / should be used the prevent the 
wood from disintegration. Painting or otherwise?

Any suggestions appreciated
