I had the same experience with my MGA.  The pump would run a long time
like it was out of gas.  I pulled my pump and tried pumping gas thru it
from a jar (easy enough to try), the pump was fine.  Ended up being a
cracked fuel inlet pipe fitting at the pump.  I switched the fittings
(inlet and outlet), switched on the ignition, and watched gas pump all
over the place.  If your sucking air somewhere, you won't get enough gas
to run with, also the problem will probably get worse.
