I rarely respond since switching to the digest version so pardon the
timeliness of these responses.
As far as whether parting out is for you, it's for everybody!!! Just make
sure you have plenty of empty boxes and storage room. I have gone in with a
fellow club member to purchase two MGBs (one is a GT) from a local junkyard
and part them out. We saw lots of little parts that we each needed, plus a
desparately needed bonnet (aluminum) and engine head. Between the two cars,
we also netted a new dashboard, eight wire wheels with knockoffs, and the
list goes on. Probably the biggest surprise befell itself during the
dismantling process. Lo and behold, the roadster had an overdrive
transmission!!! We hadn't even looked. For the price the owner was asking, we
didn't even bother looking at the two transmissions. Needless to say, we have
recovered ten times more parts from a rusting GT and a fire burnt roadster
(interior only). Not only have we gotten parts that we needed, but have
passed on to other club members like-new rubber bumpers and a pair of
side-float SU's for their restorations. This project is half way through,
the roadster has been completely disassembled, cut in half (really fun if you
haven't had the opportunity), and recycled at a local scrap metal yard. We
are letting our knuckles heal a little before taking on the GT.
Which brings me to this. I remember seeing a few posts from people looking
for GT side window glass. We have a complete set of original GT glass in good
shape except for some fogging on the front windshield. These are not of the
tinted variety. Feel free to e-mail me directly for inquisitions on the glass
or any other wierd/hard-to-find/too expensive from Moss parts. We have
already gotten our money back from the parts recovered for ourselves and club
members and can offer extremely reasonable prices (want an engine block?
non-OD tranny? cheap!!!). All parts are in Mobile, AL. The cars were '70 GT
and '75(?) roadster.
As for junkyards in MS, I have scoured over most of the ones along I-10. No
salvagable parts on the one MGB I have found.
Please no e-mails about destroying two of the remaining MG's in the world,
these two had already left this world, were not restoration candidates by any
means. Besides, now your B is an even rarer drivers cars.
